What is a cash rating? Does it mean that is how much the safe will hold?

The cash rating you see on each of the safes is not the amount each safe can physically hold, it is based on the amount of cash your insurer would cover you for overnight storage of cash.

For example a £2,000 cash rating would mean you could store up to this amount overnight. Please check with your insurer about which safe they are happy with and what cash rating they need you to have to cover your policy.

What does the fire ratings shown mean?

We have an extensive range of fire safes, they offer a range of different protection periods - 30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 minutes.

Fire safes also protect against different types of items which are paper, digital media (such as CD's, DVD's, USB-sticks) and magnetic media. This is because each of the items get damaged by fire at different temperatures. Magnetic media such as computer back up tapes and film are the most susceptible to fire.

Certain fire safes have also been tested for water resistance and drop testing. If you need a fire safe and plan to install it on an upper floor it might be worth considering a drop tested safe, this means the safe will have been subjected to the fire test and then dropped from a height of 10 metres.

When changing the user codes, what is the best way to do so?

When changing the code on the electronic safe you have we recommend doing so with the door open to test the new code before closing it. This prevents you being locked out of the safe if you mis-typed the number.

All the safes you sell are hinged on the right, is it possible to get a left hinged door?

At the entry level of safes it is not possible for us to offer a left hand hinged door, however on higher security products it is possible to do so. These are made to order and are available on a longer lead time.

If you have a specific requirement please contact one of our sales advisors who will be able to assist you in finding a solution.

The safe I have purchased has an emergency key, where shall I store it?

On the entry level safes you will find that most battery powered electronic safes have an emergency key to get into the safe when the batteries have run down or if you forget the code.

Please ensure these keys are never kept in the safe as you will never know when you might need them. As you will receive 2 emergency keys we suggest these are not kept together, that way if one is lost you at least have not lost both of them.

Some manufacturer's can supply additional keys if you do lose any, these are Arregui Safes and Sentry Safes. This may also apply to other manufacturers but not all.

What is better to have a key or an electronic lock?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions, it comes down to personal preference in the end but we can offer the following recommendation.

Key locking safes will generally last much longer than a battery powered electronic safe however you will have to find somewhere secure for the key to be kept when the safe is not in use.

An electronic locking safe is no less secure than a key lock you just have to ensure you remember the code to gain entry, having an electronic lock does mean you can get in to the safe much easier on a regular basis. On some entry level safes you will find that electronic safes will have an emergency key to open the safe in this instance you have the best of both worlds.

It is also possible to upgrade a selection of safes to have a fingerprint lock, this is known as biometric and means access can be gained by just a fingerprint.

What does AiS Approved mean on some of the safes?

AiS stands for the Association of Insurance Surveyors, it is a respected body of individual risk control and reduction experts working in the insurance market throughout the UK.

Where you see the AiS logo shown with an image of the safe, that product appears on the AiS list which means you will get the cash and content rating advertised. Some safes shown without the AiS logo may not obtain the full rating.

In all instances we would always recommend speaking to your insurer before purchasing a safe for your peace of mind.

How can I improve home security for my family?

We recommend an all-round approach to home security where possible, having a home safe is only part of that.

There have been stories where people have logged into their CCTV while away on holiday only to see a burglar in their property. If they had installed a home safe, valuables would have been secure. So, although CCTV might provide a deterrent and greater peace of mind because you can physically see what is going on it will ultimately not secure your belongings. We suggest choosing a safe alongside either an alarm or CCTV or both if the budget allows.

What happens if I lose a key to my safe?

If you should lose a key to an entry level model, then sadly it is not possible to get replacements in most cases. You could try a locksmith local to you, this needs to be a reputable MLA registered locksmith and not somewhere such as Timpsons. If you have purchased an Arregui or BTV safe from us then it may be possible for us to arrange a replacement key however we need proof of purchase and a form of ID before we are able to do this.

Should you lose a key to an insurance approved model with a double bitted key lock then replacements can be cut for you but a copy would need to be made from an original. If you have lost both keys we can arrange for an engineer to visit, they would use best practice to minimise any damages. Once open, a new lock can be fitted to get your belongings secure again.

Some key locking models from Burg Wachter and De Raat Security have the option to re-key your lock. This means should you lose a key or a staff member leaves with one, the safe is not compromised. As long as you have one key to open the lock, you can change the lock over to a new set of keys.

To do this, you would need to purchase a set of new keys in a kit from us - in the kit also comes a change key. All of this can be done without the need to call a locksmith out, saving you money. Please call us for more details and assistance

I have an external battery pack, do I use that all the time?

The external battery pack provided with your safe is only for use in emergencies, the safe will still remember your code when batteries fail or run out. Note not all safes are provided with these.

It can be plugged into a jack point which is usually located on the front lip of the keypad.

I have a safe with emergency keys, where should I keep them?

Never keep the emergency keys inside the safe, if you do and the batteries run down and you are unable to open the safe you will need to get a locksmith to open it for you by drilling it open.

We recommend keeping both keys separate incase you lose one of them.

How often should I change the batteries in my safe?

We would recommend changing the batteries in your safe every 6 months if you use it regularly. If you do not use it as often then every 12 months would be sufficient.

Our suggestion would be to replace the old batteries with Duracell or Energizer. Rechargable batteries should not be used neither are the self testing type recommended.

Did you know? Always check the expiry date on the battery pack as sometimes they can sit on a supermarket shelf for a long time.

My safe looks dirty, what can i clean it with?

Do not use any abrasive cleaners on the safe as this will damage the finish on the safe. Using a damp cloth and mild detergent will suffice.
